Do you find that some areas of your home or office are Wifi “Dead Zones”?
Are you having trouble with poor Wifi signal strength on some devices?
Does your internet signal randomly cut out as you walk around with your smartphone or tablet?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you most likely have a weak wireless router signal.
I know first hand how much of a frustrating issue this can be, especially when you have fussy kids and teenagers in the house who want 100% connectivity at all times.
There used to be certain areas in my house where connection to the wireless network was very weak, and in some areas like the back garden, loft and bathroom there was no connection at all. My son would complain about his Xbox losing connection and lagging in his bedroom upstairs, and my daughter’s iPhone internet connection would cut out as she walk around the house.
It’s recommended that you install your wireless router upstairs to provide the best overall coverage around your home. However, that’s not always possible because the main phone line that connects to the modem/router is usually found downstairs, or on the lowest level of the building.
I personally have this problem in my house. I thought about running a cable from the main phone socket downstairs to a room upstairs and have the wireless router installed there to improve signal coverage, but it was going to be more trouble than it was worth.
Thankfully I discovered a simple solution to this problem in the form of a WiFi range extender, or booster as they’re sometimes called.
I put in many hours of extensive research into finding a range extender that ticked the following boxes:
- Easy to use
- Great Performance
- Value for money
- Eliminate all Dead Zones
I was surprised at the number of Wifi range extenders available to buy online. By far the Netgear range is the most popular and highest rated.
Now, NetGear has 6 main Wifi range extender models to choose from, ranging in price from the cheaper WN3000RP, priced at around £20, to the fairly expensive NightHawk currently selling for around £130.
The NETGEAR EX6100-100UKS AC750 Wi-Fi Range Extender
I went for the mid range NetGear ex6100-100uks ac750 extender and it has eliminated all previous Wifi black spots I had around my home. I no longer hear any complaints from my daughter walking around with her iPhone, as she is now even able to stay connected when using her phone at the bottom of the garden, which was previously an area where it was not possible to connect to the internet.
My son tells me his Xbox runs perfectly online and my laptop has full bars, even in the loft. In fact, I’m using this Wifi extender as I type this and I can tell you that it’s improved our internet access throughout my house.
Netgear EX6100-100UKS AC750 Overview
Let’s talk more about this very cool little device…
We purchased our Netgear Ex6100 from Amazon.co.uk at a very reasonable £50 with next day delivery.
It’s really easy to set up, you can have the extender up and running in just a few minutes. It works by taking the 2.4 and 5GHz signal in from your current wireless router and boosting it out through an amplifier and larger external antenna system, dramatically increasing wifi signal range and strength.
The NETGEAR EX6100-100UKS AC750 connects to any brand of router. Our home internet is with Sky broadband and we’re using an old standard Sky Wifi router with the Netgear EX6100 range extender.
To set the extender up you simply plug the unit into a mains electrical socket, then on your device such as an iPad, you would look in your Wifi settings for “EX6100_NETGEAR_2GEXT” (or something similar) and connect to it using your current router password. All that is required to link the extender with the router is to press a couple of buttons, it’s really that simple.
It comes with an easy to follow user manual to walk you through the whole process and troubleshoot any problems.
If you have your wireless router installed downstairs, I recommend that you plug the extender into a socket upstairs, or anywhere further away from your router to optimize and expand the range coverage to its maximum potential.
As I’ve already mentioned this will connect to any current brand of router, so if you’re using a BT or Sky router the EX6100 is fully compatible.
With this being a midrange model it has the “FastLane Technology” feature which provides a high speed connection, ideal for HD video streaming, gaming, smart TV’s, video chatting and smooth internet surfing.
Netgear claims the AC750 performance provides up to 100% faster internet speed on mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones, and easily handles multiple devices running at the same time.
It also has a 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet port so that you can use hardwired straight to your device.
Built in LED indicators provides visual reassurance when everything is connected and functioning properly. But the best part is the directional LED arrow lights that are used to guide you to the optimal setup location in your home.
The EX6100 AC750 Wifi Range Extender is very compact – discreetly plugging into a wall socket.
Another cool feature is the Wi-Fi Analytics App for your smart device. The app provides a detailed overview of your network status, wifi signal strength and speed.
At the time of writing this review / overview there are just over one thousand reviews for the EX6100 AC750 Wifi Range Extender on Amazon UK, most of which are very positive with the product boasting a 4 out of 5 star rating.
Most people are amazed at how easy it is to set up and are more than happy with the performance. But like any product, there is a minority of negative reviews where people are complaining about network “drop-outs” and connection problem, but some of these could be down to the internet provider and not the extender.
Bottom line – I’m extremely happy with this product and the swath of positive reviews from other customers reflect the quality and reliability of the Netgear EX6100 Extender.
